When a variable frequency drive ramps a motor through a critical speed, the resulting vibration can tear bearings apart in hours. We see it constantly on our production floor. Setting the vfd skip frequency (also called vfd jump frequency) is the standard engineering fix to bypass these dangerous mechanical resonance zones. On the SHZK 300N series, this is handled directly through Group P8 parameters.
The Physics of Mechanical Resonance
Mechanical resonance happens when the excitation frequency matches the natural frequency of the driven load. You can read the textbook definition on Wikipedia’s Mechanical Resonance page, but out here on the shop floor, it just looks like a machine shaking itself to pieces. The vibration amplitude spikes. If you are driving a long shaft, a large induced draft fan, or a conveyor with a specific belt tension, you will inevitably hit a speed where the whole assembly resonates.
Instead of redesigning the mechanical system—which costs thousands and delays the project—we adjust the drive. The variable-frequency drive simply accelerates through the dangerous band without dwelling in it.
How the Jump Function Works
When the frequency reference enters the skip band, the drive output frequency stops at the lower boundary of the band. It waits there until the reference command exceeds the upper boundary, then it jumps to the upper boundary and continues accelerating. The motor never actually operates at the resonant frequency.
During our final testing of the 300N series, we verify this function on every unit before it leaves the facility. It is a critical safety and longevity feature.
Configuring P8-09 and P8-10 on the SHZK 300N
The SHZK 300N provides two independent jump frequency centers. This is useful if your mechanical system has two distinct resonance points—say, one at 25 Hz from a belt harmonic and another at 42 Hz from a shaft critical speed.
| Function Code | Name | Set Range | Factory Value | DEC Address |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P8-09 | Jump Frequency1 | 0.00 Hz to maximum frequency | 0.00Hz | 63497 |
| P8-10 | Jump Frequency2 | 0.00 Hz to maximum frequency | 0.00Hz | 63498 |
By default, both are set to 0.00 Hz, meaning the jump function is disabled. When you are integrating these drives into a SCADA system via Modbus RTU, you can write directly to DEC addresses 63497 and 63498 to tune the skip bands remotely without opening the panel.
Real-World Case from the Test Floor
Last month, we had a 55kW unit (model 300N-055GB-T4) coupled to a centrifugal fan for a burn-in test. At exactly 32 Hz, the enclosure rattled violently. The vibration sensor on our test rig threw an alarm.
We paused the run, accessed the keypad, and set P8-09 to 32.00 Hz. The drive smoothly accelerated through the 30-34 Hz band without dwelling. The vibration dropped back to baseline. Problem solved in under two minutes. No mechanical changes required.
