Why does my VFD trip during startup?

Common causes of VFD tripping during startup include:

  • Overcurrent trip: The motor is starting under heavy load. Try increasing the acceleration time or selecting a VFD with a higher power rating.
  • Overvoltage trip: Check input voltage stability. If the supply voltage is too high, install an input reactor.
  • Overload trip: The load exceeds the VFD’s rated capacity. Verify motor nameplate current matches VFD rated output current.
  • Phase loss: Check all three-phase connections are secure.

Do I need to oversize the VFD for heavy-duty loads?
